Gleanings from the tabletop

Still early, but here’s my take on things: IF you turn off all the lights, and crack up the wind and the rain, and make sure there is no car in the lane and make public announcements about the availability of the free candy at another location and simply build your house far from the madding crowds, then you can let Hallowe’en be “someone else’s problem”. I’ll know better in a couple of hours.

Good but ineffective intentions

I should stop confusing good intentions with effective actions. Today, I put the boat away. Actually, hung it on the wall, because it really is a very diminutive style of boat. And within the hour, I undid my actions, because the season isn’t over until… I’ll figure that out. Suffice that what I did, I can do again.

Too impatient to wait (for winter)

Blame my afternoon on a lack of patience. I had considered leaving the deck clearing effort until after the first snowfall. Use the new layer of slippy to get my chairs and table down the hill. Today, tested by sunshine, I simply resorted to strong arm .Yes, the grass on the slope aided, but my patio/deck furniture is stowed until spring. I wasn’t sitting out there, much; now I will simply go for “not standing out there, much”. A subtle difference.

Those one-try stickers are crazy

Who knew? Turns out that a lifetime of driving experience might not be enough, if you have to take a test in a different country. To be fair, I almost passed. And my wrong answers were dealing with rules of the place, rather than an overview of my talent. A confession: I had no idea how many days I had to notify the constabulary, should I be involved in a minor traffic accident. Next time, I’ll read the manual through (at least one time) before assuming that my skill set is a transferable one.

But why does it hurt?

This afternoon, I nudged things a step closer to winter. The easy stuff, like bringing the hose reel inside, before any swirled icicles can formed. And the BBQ is in where I can keep an eye on it. A big job, where I do some disassembly and then move the larger piece through the kitchen and down a set of steps into the garage. Seemed easier than trying to lead the wheeled beast through the back garden.

Almost a memory moment

On my timeline, a photo of a rock band with a familiar name. In fact, the guitar player was the band leader, back when they performed at my high school, a full half-century ago. I will squash the name, to protect the aged. But here’s the thing; since we don’t get much live music nowadays (blame it on the pandemic, or the fulgurant cost of tickets, or whatever). The memories of the bands we did see hold a special niche in the brain.

No need to watch

Checked the calendar for this week, and noted that I’m due to get shot. Err… get a shot. This will mean that for more than twenty years in a row, I’ve lined up and received the inoculant of the season. Anti-flu. And in that period, I’ve avoided the discomfort of a sick week, each and every time. No side effects. For those of you who are hesitant, let me give you some free advice (up here in Canada, some things really are free). Get your flu shot.

File this as a near visit. Or a close encounter.

We almost had visitors this afternoon. I’m still rattled.

How I tried to go to prison

ON my scorecard of “life experience”, I have a glaring hole. I’ve never been in jail. I have driven by a jail, but that doesn’t count. It has been repurposed into a pizza place, if memory serves. Anyhow, I did try, once, to get into jail.

My own, personalized code

According to observers, our local waters abound with whales. The lack of cruise ships might be a reason. I know; the sellers of tourist junk don’t want it mentioned, because those floating transporters of gullible strangers are good for the “bottom line”.
