Finally, a non-routine day

Housework is a drudge, right? What if you have motivation? In today’s case, we have a visitor. Total stranger, spending the night. The obligation, then, is to quickly clean up. Pretend to be socially civilized. Even go with the idea that we keep the place this neat and tidy, all the time. I know, a myth in the making. But, we did our best, and when the supper table was set, we seemed like normal folk. I think.

Our calendar is flexible

RUNNING JOKE CALENDAR

Our refrigerator collects odd things. Photos of other people’s children. A detailed recycling/garbage schedule. And most importantly, a calendar that details future appointments, of sorts. We have a special sliding date sticker that shows when the border to the US might reopen for vehicle traffic. It’s been sliding, month after month, for more than a year and a half; the latest forecast is next October 21st. I feel secure in knowing that I don’t have any travel option involving four wheels on the ground any time soon.

Thank you for your regular calls

There’s a fellow from one of the major credit card companies that keeps in touch with me. I assume he’s one fellow, even if his name changes regularly. I recognize his voice, and he does have an accent that betrays him as someone who has never gone to school with me. Anyhow, he worries about my financial dealings. Real or otherwise.

The last buzz of summer?

Some of the tiny pleasures of summer are still around. Out there. Tonight, we have noted an upsurge in the numbers (volume?) of mosquitos. That last stretch of rain must have resuscitated a hatch that should have been gone for the year. And we’re paying the price, in blood. There is a new gadget here, still in its box. Thermocell.  No, I don’t want to go out on the deck and test its efficiency. Next year will be soon enough. For tonight, we’re going old school, with arm flailing and a swatter.

Our hissy-pot is whole, once again

A couple of months back, a visitor decided to get involved in home cooking. Perfect vacation goal. Anyhow, the recipe called for a “pressure cooker”, and we had just the thing. Except for one flaw. The little bouncy pressure thingie that goes on top was MIA, so we had to abort that plan and find a workaround. Nothing McGyver, if you’re worried about the direction.

Stay home and recall the better times

The message from our neighbours was clar: they are on “the Rock”, doing what tourists do. A twinge of jealousy in our house. Idle chatter about putting the dog in his magic harness and going off to explore. But, everything comes with a balance. A message from one of the local schools, letting us know that a good part of their population is now in quarantine. And there’s more.

A desire to go drip-free

After a recent effort to fill my RV water tank using a funnel, I decided that we need to step up our game. Not to deny the utility of the funnel, but the fill port is located on the exterior vertical wall of the rig, and water obeys gravity. That is, we managed to pour a lot of water on the ground.

Waiting for a muse

Did you hear my new song? Of course you didn’t. That refers to a possible future event, and we are not there, yet. Somewhere, on my bucket list, is a great musical moment. Involving me. And when the gears of progress are turning ever-so-slowly, it might take a while before I become famous.

Still no pin

Outside my kitchen window, within a stone’s throw, there is a pin. Not something insignificant; this is one of those pins that surveyors like to leave behind. In fact, according to some legal papers, I own four of them. Corner pins, on my trapezoid. And invisible, for what they’re worth.

From the freezer to your table

Sometimes, a home cooked meal counts as a wonder of the civilized world. Don’t get all uppity about that 5-star restaurant in a world class vacation spot. Go closer to home. There, are you hungry yet?
