Here we are; the end of the month, and there’s been no breeze all day. Do you think they went over budget, and had to turn off the fans early? Trying to fit life into the constraints of a calendar again. Like, school must be about to begin, because September.

Planning to heat stuff

We have plans. To go camping with son #2, for exactly. And all of our lives have evolved, from back when we camped as a young nuclear family. For example, cooking.

Superlatives in storm stories

Summer on the Island. Everybody goes to the beach (present company excepted). It’s expected, and it’s fun, if you thrive on sun and sand. Even the dogs go along with the game.

A weak news cycle

This might be the most normal day I’ve had, in years. With the unexpected arrival of close family, and other members inbound, I moved from my spectator mode to active participant in a group moment. Of course, we had to go to the city, and find people (and get proper parking), but it went well and I’m back home before nightfall.

Sudden escape

An eventual incident: that is how I refer to a sudden breach in one of the Sodastream cylinders. It’s loud, and the layer of very cold frost is actually hand-painful. Thirty minutes later, and I still don’t know if this involved the overpressure screw, or the main valve, or the thread into the tank, or… I’ll find out, perhaps tomorrow, and we’ll exchange the bad tank for a good one. And life will go on.

My record has fallen

I have learned that someone has set a new world record for eating donairs. In Halifax! I don’t have the exact count, but I suspect that MY world record (of one) has fallen. Will I have to return my trophy, if it ever arrives?

Potential monsters in my sea

Some things qualify as poorly kept secrets. Today, when CBC announced that the swimming area of my LOCAL BEACH was temporarily closed, due to a shark sighting… that qualified as real. I mean, I’ve known about the risk of sharks for most of my adult life. The local dive shop sold “bang sticks” which seemed like over reaction, but there you have it. I’d seen photos of fish that had been hauled aboard. I cannot claim to have ever been theoretical prey, but I’m going to be better informed in future. Perhaps our dog not wanting to swim has nothing to do with fear of getting his fur wet.

Still can’t whistle

My first contact with educational TV? That, I recall. I watched an episode of Dennis The Menace, (Season 2 Episode 10), where the attempt by the star to learn how to whistle left me astonished. No, I couldn’t mock a bird, and the show didn’t teach me. In fact, this was about the same time I was losing my baby teeth, and I had a faint hope that I would come away with a new super power. I didn’t.

Little wind and less light

We are not becalmed, as they used to say. I live far from the Doldrums, and around here the breeze is a fact of life. So, if you noticed from my weather station that its blowing zero, it’s a lie. Or at least a mechanical malfunction. I went out, several times, and used a pole to swat things back into spin mode, but I’m unwilling to spend the night trying to watch. Flashlight and me, poor pair. Tomorrow, if the gale ends, I’ll try to take things down for a closer look. I hate climbing a stepladder when I might get tossed overboard.

A moonlight cruise needs moonlight

I am so easily distracted. Music history. In particular, when it covers a period that I actually survived. Watching a compilation of Canadian bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s; singing along and trying to recall if I actually saw them perform. I grew up in a small market, and all the good bands had to play somewhere. If it happened to be my high school gym, or the barn that served as a concert venue in university… I might have been there.
