Boiling my water via technology

My day to experiment with technology. I found our induction hotplate, measured a litre of cold water into a suitable pan, and plugged the hotplate into the “battery box”. Not the technical term for it, but a better one, when explaining to those unfamiliar with my new toy.

Preparing for those dark moments

Another afternoon, squandered. Perhaps that isn’t he best word, but I’m still trying to decide how much I would be willing to pay for some solar panels. The sweet point is around $1 a watt, here in Canada. The people at Amazon can deliver, once I commit to the idea of purchasing. And there goes the hamster in the wheel.

Make and bake or buy

I’m sorry to report that the weather forecasts have been wrong. Not only did we not get the big heat they predicted, but the thunder storm that started our way from “up west” petered out close to St. Peters. I was looking forward to something interesting!

Who lives there?

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. I miss mailboxes with actual names on the sidebar. Used to be, even if you already knew where everyone lived (force of habit and family ties) the box served as a recall. Kept you from showing up on the wrong doorstep. Now, finding where someone lives in the absence of an up-to-date   contact number can turn into an evening of adventure. At least with StreetView you can make an educated guess, but there has to be a better way.

No longer racing to the bottom of the bowl

I have proof that I’m getting older: there was an ice cream eating contest held, this afternoon, in the immediate area. I did not go. I did not even dream of going. Yes, the flavour was vanilla, which might have been a factor, even if I didn’t  know that until after, when the photos appeared on social media. It’s just that I would have had to compete against much younger contestants, and they need all the ice cream they can get.

The right tool for one job, at least

Recently, I decided that it was time to buy the right tool for the job. In this case, removing the fancy lock nut covers on the RV. Someone had posted a hint on social media, and I had checked with the only relative that actually runs a tool store. It wasn’t just a rumour, the tool has a name and a part number.

Reviewing the numbers on a new house (not for me)

An unexpected surprise from the developers over at Firefox; today, we received an updated interface. Not only that, but there are more colour schemes, including a “dark” one that actually makes me happy.

MIA: One drain plug

Even though we have no travel plans, short term, I’m a conscientious RV person. Every fall, before the onset of cold weather and snow, I do what is known in the circles as “winterization”. Too long  to explain, but it does kill an afternoon. And every spring, once I feel confident that there are no sudden ice age signs, I go to the other extreme (known as “de-winterization”).

Birds, bees, flowers and trees

Given that our major visual distraction here, other than the ocean, is the bird life, I thought it might be useful to show the relative size between a bird and a common flower. I didn’t realize until today that our warblers  enjoyed the dandelions. Cover, colour, flavour. Here’s a photo for you to visualize things.
