Behind the Black Mirror
Now that the essentials of the gear required to make my work area have been unboxed, it’s time to improve things. In keeping with the “no need to put out the best china plates” model, I’ve swapped the UR22 against the UR44 as my sound interface for day-to-day. Had to download some drivers (it’s a Mac, after all), but the first impressions are satisfactory. I’m watching back episodes of Black Mirror. For someone who has had years of US sitcoms to entertain, this counts as really strange content. I’ll keep watching.
While up in Quebec, I’d looked at the price of guitar racks, and then turned to the DIY files. Not worth what I would spend in PVC at the local hardware store. I kept checking online and found a sale: the box arrived this afternoon, in one of those actual home delivery moments from our postal person. A box of steel and foam, with minimal instructions. Several minutes later, a rather substantial stand, which now has four guitars arrayed. Two thumbs up.
I also made a first effort at using the iPad as a sound source for the new piano. With only a minimum of effort, I’ve improved the sound profile; some of the synth/piano mixes are fun, and the only thing left to do is dream (and find a way to keep the iPad from snoozing). Probably a minor detail. It turns out that there are many, many ways to get new noise out of gear. A good time ahead, even if I’m stuck in headphone territory.
