Big rainy day
Those dry fields, from yesterday? Not any more. It’s been raining for the last twenty hours or so, and we just passed the 115mm measured rainfall mark. Coupled with high winds – the dog flatly refuses to go outside without better incentives. I understand. We didn’t flinch when the lights did so, because the generator kicked in as planned. Not so simple for our neighbour, with a smaller backup system. Our ovens were drafted into service for the afternoon.
Of course, we were already on their invited list for supper, so it made sense. At the appointed hour, I brought the car as close to the garage door as was prudent, and we loaded food for the short run up the road. I haven’t been to a family meal (with other, not from my family people) in years, and it gave new opportunities for conversation.
We’re back home, and the lights continue to flicker. Will this be a “two times on standby power” day? It remains to be seen. Over in Sydney, they’ve had twice the rainfall; there are canoes out on city street. Hope the sump pumps in their area will hold up to the stress. Here, we’re good to carry on.
I watched the second presidential debates last evening. Not a pretty sight. The next few years are going to be bumpy for all of us, given that “your neighbour is an elephant” model we live with. I’m fortunate that my life depends little on the success of the economy, but my children may have reason to worry.
