Seeking relief

posted in computing |

I’m in the midst of devolution. Much more and they’ll be sending in a film crew to catch my meltdown. No, nothing that is really important, just a swamp of details. For example, at least three computers around here are demonstrating that a virus has taken control of the desktop. After putting in more hours than I like to think on one machine yesterday (victim of Vundo), the family seemed pretty much reconciled to a reformat and regroup our forces, when two others started randomly flashing a popup window that claimed to be “personalizing settings”. At least, that’s what we’ve determined the message to be.

You see, as computers get faster, so do the error messages. To even see this latest version, we had to run a screen capture program and then move through the data file frame by frame. It doesn’t fix the problem, but we’ve done something concrete, so we feel proactive.

And then there are the birds that are laughing at our attempts to clean the pool. As I discovered last year, the grackle uses our pond to hydrate its food. Unfortunately, it’s a messy operation, and as they move to opposing sides of the pool from the person busily cleaning crap off the sides and bottom, the birds add to the collective wealth. I know that wanton destruction of wildlife is immoral and against certain bylaws, but if I had me one of those fancy BB affairs, I’d be leaving a mark or three.

The weekend is here and I’ll probably be in tech mode all through the days of rest. Not fair! And now that the $5 million report on reasonable accomodation (nothing to do with boarding houses or cheap motels) has been released, I’ll be compulsively reading extracts, to see if the solution to out of control birds or computer viruses is among the recommendations.
