Asking the right questions

posted in photography |

Sometimes, I need a pinch of inspiration. Whether it’s musical, or literary or whatever; I need to see someone else doing something new, that I haven’t tried before.

For example, taking photos. And yes, I do, and I have for most of my life. However, seeing a wonderful from someone else’s portfolio isn’t enough. Too many variables for my way of seeing things. I need to know more about the “how” of a photo. Someone took a great shot of the local lighthouse, and I asked around until I found out the “who”.  Turns out that the photographer had a great, parallel website, replete with technical information. All my questions, answered in a string of numbers.

This evening, I took the time to watch a video blog (yes, I know; a “vlog”) by another local photographer. Out in nature, not far from here.  I now have a couple of ideas about sites that are off the beaten track; might be worth a visit, once hip waders aren’t required. As well, I learned how the angle of view depended as much on a tripod as anything else. Might need to update the gear list. Yes, I’ve sent off a pointed question about the “what”. The “where” will follow, and the “when” will be up to me. All that remains to ask is the “why (not)?”

That’s how I roll. A smidgen of inspiration, followed by a dollop of technical info. Just enough to add some flavour to things. This could be an interesting spring after all. Followed by summer, or course…
