Rows of planned greenery
Consider preparing your grocery list. Ideally, there’ll be a mixture of things; healthy living, etc. Don’t forget to eat your veggies. Today, we went to the “next level”. This was seed ordering day.
Although not a single spade of earth has been turned, sometime in the next few weeks we’re planning to move from the easy way of getting vitamins, by wandering the produce aisles at the nearest market. Instead, we’ll go back to the way of my grandparents, with rows of planned greenery, and a hope of harvest (before we starve). I jest; the actual cessation of store bought will be carefully orchestrated, depending on the bounty of our efforts.
My efforts, apparently. The project involved six beds with sixteen “square footers”, as outline in one of the books I ordered last year. I need another carload of lumber (bed definition), and we’re going to see what dirt really costs. My hope of raiding fallow ground now appears foolhardy – farmers notice when a layer of soil is spirited away by something other than strong winter winds.
There’s so much to learn. A table of compatible vs combative species. Natural ways of shooing a forest full of scavengers. Bugs. This will begin the right way, with a dream of “going organic”. I know; a thousand farmers can’t all be wrong, but if we can avoid the near occasions of poisonous chemistry, we win.
One of our neighbours invested her afternoon in our project, and I’m sure she’ll be called back. A gardening guru. And in an ideal world, we’ll learn, and the next season will be less knowledge intensive.
