Shopping surplus

posted in economy |

Just across the way, in spite of all the snow, a construction team is hard at work erecting a big box. That box will soon hold a new grocery store, located strategically right across the road from another grocery store.

So, did the team at head office have an extra stickpin and decided on the spot for their new crown jewel by closing the collective eyes and sticking it onto the map? It seems clear that nobody came all the way out here to see if, perchance, there were already places for people to get their vittles. This neighbourhood stopped growing almost a decade ago, after the second elementary school opened and the mini-mall beside the existing grocery store decided that perpetually empty storefronts have the upscale image sought by the citizens of Beauport East.

Are we going to have a back-and-forth of eager shoppers, keen to save an extra 3 cents on a box of corn flakes? I’m as eager as they must/might be, just to see how the new retail war goes.
