Dirty doubloons

posted in politics |

The east coast of Canada has been invaded by clowns. Forget the rhetoric; the whole protest against the seal hunt is one designed to receive as much press coverage as possible. I won’t bother naming those involved, because there is no need to give them any more public  presence than they’ve already garnered.

There have been deaths this season. Pointless deaths, due to institutional oversight. The small community involved will suffer for years to come. The very fact that the funeral service was carried nationally shows that many care about what has happened. Meanwhile, the “Come From Aways”, the media sluts, have found another way to mock the courts. To quote the CBC, “the bail was paid in doubloons, to protest the coast guard action”. Pure media stunt, aimed at drawing attention; not to the hunt, but to the everlasting fundraising.

Yes, I think the protest is wrong. A protest as pretext, because the “animal rights” group involved cares only about the “monetary rights”. If the hunt ended tomorrow, they’d have to search for something else to keep the coffers full. This sideshow has been going on for decades, and at some point their bluff should be called. What would it cost to let those with chequebooks know that they are feeding an organization without a soul.

It would be fitting justice if this whole thing makes it to court and the maximum fine was assessed. Let those with deep pockets contribute to the cause, by making the government a little bit richer. If the cost of fundraising on the backs of honest fishers rises, the roadshow might find another venue.

Rant mode off. May the hunt be prosperous.
