Between sea and sky

posted in politics, technology |

Somewhere between sea and sky, a hovering, buzzing machine. Hard at work (sic), mapping a sector of environmentally fragile territory with a camera. All is good… until the battery fails. Suddenly, the sea wins the contest.

This is not what a friend wanted, as an outcome for an afternoon in the wild. Quickly retrieving his gear, he packed up and headed over to see what could be done, in terms of recovery. At my place, evidently. I wasn’t there, on arrival, but the others quickly pitched in. Distilled water. Warm air. I arrived about then.

The equipment is modular, so some disassembly was possible. Got the core electronics into a dish of rice (aka dessicant). With the help of some simple tools, the unit went from unwieldy to collapsed, and we fit everything into a large plastic box. Surrounded with foam blocks and empty milk cartons (to reduce the volume), the spare bag of rice was repurposed to aid in drying during the trip back to town.

I won’t know how things worked out, for a day or two, but I’m hoping that we managed to “save the day”.

Met up with one of my cousins from away, at the market. He’s down for a mini family reunion, even though the peak period for tourism has passed. Perhaps he’ll stop by to visit the “new digs” while in the area. If not, I’ll be here next year.

In local politics, the unelected leader of the official opposition (provincially) opted to step down from his job this morning. Seems there isn’t much future in a political gig where you can’t even show up in the office.
