I’m proud of the new arrival

The term gestation period is one with many levels of meaning. A middle school biology teacher will use the comparative approach; a squirrel is shorter than an elephant. A parent-to-be will recalculate the elapsed time, again and again, praying for insight and foresight. And then there is the analogical usage, where the period spent waiting for something to be completed will be so labelled.

We heard that we could be “early adopters”, back in the time before snowbanks, and we joined the thousands of others, patiently watching and waiting for a sign that we would also receive some attention from the gang at MIT who had a wonderful idea, bound to change the educational environment on a truly international scale.

This afternoon, after 110 days,my G1G1 finally stands for GaveOneGotOne. Note the past tense. My weakening faith in the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) was rewarded, and the biggest kid in this house got a brand new tiny laptop. Oh so small, mignon in my second language. Shiny, bright, full of potential.

This post from IrishMoss (the name chosen at random) is a test of how well I can type in dim light with my fingers tightly grouped. It feels just like when I tried a quarter-size violin; all the notes are there if only I stay focused.

I’m not going to include any photos or soundbites from the “little fellow” although the webcam and sound system function very well. After all, there’s a lot of time ahead of us, as we grow together, and proud adoptive “parents” will not sit quietly by. For the curious, this one is green and white with a yellow body, and the wireless spoke WPA right out of the box.
