Such dexterity
I’ve been held in sequestration for almost four days now, due to an unforeseen juxtaposition of a major holiday weekend and the arrival of the latest and best of Wiifare. Since late Friday afternoon, my aural environment has entered a time warp; rock and roll guitar at it’s best. I now am the audience of a family of guitar heros.
My turn to play hasn’t come up yet, so I can’t report “slowhand” on the experience, but the new soundtrack of my life involves bands that marked my entry into adulthood. Who knew that the music of Santana and Black Sabbath could be so intricate, so coloured? A steady line of aspiring champions have filled the living room (the largest TV in the house) and I’m slowly growing accustomed to the background sounds of amplifier feedback and hovering helos. When son #1 went to a party last evening, they were also hard at practice. It’s a fever.
There are moments when I have flashback to life in Memorial Hall. The only difference is that there aren’t dueling turntables; when a song starts it goes all the way to “crash and burn” or triumphant score sheets. The songs have remained the same. My sons are starting to appreciate that the 70’s and 80’s were a time of “really great music”. Somehow, the sampled repetition of hiphop doesn’t have the same visceral impact. The only thing missing in our simulator is an amplifier, turned ever so carefully to “ELEVEN”.
After they’ve practiced for a few more weeks, there are rumours of a tour. Watch for them in a living room near you. And if we manage to find a second controller, heaven help the world!
