Such a feast

posted in food |

A good idea, carefully nurtured, can take root. Grow. Become an annual tradition. That’s what we joined, this afternoon.

About a decade back, some people with a strong social conscience decided to raise funds for a good cause. In this case, a cooking shelter adjacent to a school in a small African village. At least, that’s what I think happened. It was all before “my time”. At some point, the idea of a meal, produced back at home in Canada for people who would contribute to a cause, if pampered, took root. And now we have something much bigger. The Village Feast.

Based on past years (and today’s parking lot and array of tables), somewhere in excess of a thousand people sat down to eat. Chowder, from an Army kitchen. Steaks, cooked to order on huge charcoal grills. Lobster, for some. Locally desserts. Music. Games. Just about everything…

I went down, at the last minute yesterday, for our tickets. Luckily, there was paper (plastic?) money in the wallet, as the ticket seller had no other form of payment available. In sharp contrast with the website that did take virtual money (but only after you gave away too much personal data for a simple transaction). All in a day’s commerce. We headed over to the site (a field near the sports complex) in mid-afternoon, and joined a logistically perfect setup. No glitches. Real cutlery (I had brought steak knives, just in case). And we were back home before the afternoon wore long.

We were noobs, this time around. Next season, I’ll be a veteran.
