Outside the comfort zone
Time to commit to our new kitchen. Take a long list, drive for close to an hour to a full-feature grocery store, even bring a cooler to keep the inevitable frozen food selection at close to recommended temperatures. All went well, and the order was stored in the cupboard before noon.
The noon moment was important, as we approach solstice. The alignment of the deck with the southern exposure might mean something, should I decide to roll out a solar option. At least, it answered my question without a need to apply complex magnetic correction to my compass.
Sometimes, it’s good to move out of the “comfort zone” and seek new ideas. Musical ideas. After winning a coin toss, two of us headed to Rollo Bay for the local section of the Small Halls schedule. On stage, Cynthia MacLeod, with her “close my eyes and drive it” style of fiddling. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of If Ever You Were Mine in the playlist.
Next up, Kaia Kater and Scott Leach, with some very modal work on banjo and violin. She’s a Montreal girl who studies Appalachian folk music in West Virginia. Nothing familiar, but new is good.
Finally, Dave Gunning… great guitarist, with a homespun manner and tongue-in-cheek humour. We had front row seats, and I’d do it again. Son #3 seemed less sure.
Some familiar faces in the audience, and the drive back in the dark. We were too late for a donair dessert, but we did get gas. On that note, the market area is better served.
