Mistaken largess

posted in economy, media |

Let’s get a few details in order. Bank robbery is wrong. Bank fraud is wrong. Bank giving me permission to withdraw money even after I insist repeatedly that it’s not my account; confusing. One poor man in the Empire State is now facing charges for exactly this reason.

I’m relying on the newspaper which is rarely wrong (right?), where a man was given access to more money than I’ll earn in my lifetime through the error of some over-zealous bank officials. In this time of rampant identity theft, he had to deal with identity conferral; the bank was convinced that the homonymic account holder did merit withdrawal privileges. One can only insist so many times before the natural desire to refuse free monies is beaten back. He went to the trough.

Now, all people are not intellectually equal, so he took this windfall and invested it, badly. Two millions later, the bank realized that a rose by any other name might be a tomato and closed the vault. Now they want the money back.

This is unfair. Here we have two stupid parties; the miscreant investor and the clueless bankers. The party of the first part accepts that bad investing doesn’t reward you. The party of the second part wants the digested cake back. I’d like to believe that somewhere there is a lawyer with a few pro bono hours to offer up, just to see how this one plays out.

I am pleased to announce that my enthusiastic review of the movie Once was sufficient to sway the Academy. The statue for Song of the Year went, last evening, to “Falling Slowly”. It’s all in the timing. For those planning their entries for next year, contact me early. I have a penchant for Celtic music, and a good fiddle is what Hollywood needs.
