Following the imaginary lines

posted in environment |

I played the avoidance game for as long as possible. Waited for rain. Considered the intensity of each gust of wind. And, finally, headed for the basement. Just long enough to get a firm grip on the chassis, and drag the lawn mower up to the same level as the great out of doors.

Then, filled with the spirit of a new year, I followed the mower, up and down the imaginary lines of the lawn, until the new blade length seemed suitable. It’s not a long job; I just think of the whole thing as the antithesis of good farming. Growing a crop, and letting it lie. Lay. Whatever…

I didn’t poke my eyes out, navigating under the linden. I didn’t cut the cord (we are stylishly electric, in this yard). I didn’t even disturb any wildlife, other than a single bumblebee. Too early in the season. This won’t be the last time, either. The weeds grow too quickly to be ignored, at least until the temperatures turn tropical.

The real news, today, was out of Ireland. In a complete break with the historic “teachings of the holy Mother, Church”, the population at large voted in a referendum to modify the constitution. From now on, same sex couples will have the same rights before the courts as the rest of the gang. That is, marriage. We all know that a law doesn’t bestow harmony in the home, but it goes a long way towards making life easier for those concerned.  I’m not sure where we stand in Canada; there hasn’t been any demand for an amendment, so we’re probably good.
