Closed for business

posted in economy |

Given the percentage of expendable income I’ve left there over the years, I would have expected a head’s up. Instead, Twitter brought the news, at breakfast time. Future Shop is closed. Not “it’s early, we’re still closed”; the brown paper over the doors and a polite farewell to the staff kind of closed. That’s big news in Canada.

We don’t have a range of retail, when we need a new TV, or a hard drive, or tax software. Future Shop was the go to store; most stuff was at a reasonable price point, and inventory was solid. I was in, only a few days ago. From here on in, I’m waiting for a miracle.

There might be a parallel: right after Easter, about half of the locations will re-open, renamed and sporting new livery. Whether MY location will play phoenix remains to be seen. And more of my shopping will be forced into the coffers of the goliath: Amazon. After all, delivery by postal vehicle is acceptable.

Earth Hour starts in a couple of minutes, forcing me to think faster. The lights are going out, and if I play the game, I’m logging off for an hour. Or going over to battery mode. I’ll let you know how that plays out. My devotion to the cause is not “crazy devoted”. No candles need meet their melt to satisfy my need for luminosity. The dog hasn’t expressed an opinion (nothing new there).

And today was another “melt” day. The snow levels are dropping steadily. Maybe this winter of discontent was just a variation on a constant theme.
