Keeping time

posted in music |

What raises your stress quotient? I’m not here to offer a checklist; you know what sets you off. However, this evening we enjoyed, as a family, a movie that recalled triggers for the two musicians present.

Whiplash. You can look up its credentials, or watch it, if you happen to enjoy a mix of torture and drumming. Back, a lifetime ago, I sat on a similar throne. The “monkey waving his arms in front” wasn’t psychotic, but there were common elements. Let’s face it; when you’ve got the loudest (and least musical) instrument in the band, others know and notice what you’re doing. You’re the beating heart of the group. The others care about your timeliness.

I made it through my years in the public eye, and moved on to other things. Imagine being the guy with the brightest flashing light in the room… Anyhow. The movie kept me awake. And will probably do so, in future.

Spent some time reading from social media this afternoon. Articles that won’t make the daily newspaper: How to speak like a Newfoundlander (don’t), or How to avoid conflict in prison (stay out). An interesting amalgam of texts from other, troubled minds. Not your average Readers’ Digest material.

I wonder if I’ll ever get to the point where my work makes the crossover? Could I produce material that made someone else mutter under their breath? Or am I better suited to a life where the dog cares if I scratch his ear periodically? Hard choice.

Another month begins. Like a lamb, for the weather afficionados. Does this mean that we’re facing another month of turbulence?
