More reasons to get your shots

posted in health |

I’m not vaccinated, but I’m immune… the cry of my generation. Unlike a whole class of socially irresponsible adults in certain “educated” sectors of the population, I owe my lack of certain innoculations to a historic reality; they weren’t available “in my time”.

The current case in point is a return to the measles reality. A disease that I remember too well. Spots with discomfort. Swathered lotions. Sequestration in a room with blankets to block out light; not sure why, but that was part of the home treatment. I had both the red and German varieties (and I survived).

Another childhood illness that was part of my life in the real world: mumps. Both sides. Not much fun. If there had been a needle, I would have administered it myself.

Seriously, there’s no scientific reason to NOT vaccinate the ankle biters in your home. Proven. Check it out. And then give your progeny AND their classmates a fighting chance. Or, find a desert island and emigrate.

Rant mode off, for now.

What to do? Another year of Carnaval. Perhaps my last, living in the neighbourhood. On the flip side, a windchill approaching -30C, and a disinterest in marching bands dressed for the high Arctic. No fun to watch, less to hear (tuning a cold trumpet is a misunderstood art form). There might be a TV view available, but that’s ersatz.

I did see the opening ceremonies on the evening news, so that might be enough. Besides, my inefficient innoculation against the flu is real.
