Will it be long enough?

posted in humour |

Yet another situation for angst: will it be long enough?

The new garage, I mean. This will be a big addition to the new house. Although there have been other garages, at other addresses, this is the first time that I’ve made a deliberate choice to have “a room for a car”.

Other cars have sat outside, in all the variations of weather we have up here. None have ever complained; that’s the role of the driver, armed with a scraper or broom. This time around, we decided to pamper ourselves. Not just heated seats… Heated everything.

But, until yesterday, we didn’t even know the dimensions. A “one and a half” seems more like a dessert sizing. So, with sufficient width for a rig (with mirrors), the question comes down to length. Doesn’t it always?

Our current car, sort of a baby SUV with a tiny trailer hitch for the bike rack, requires just over 15 feet. I’ll stay with Imperial measurements, because… Well, because. That means we’ll have about 8 feet available behind the hatch. Or in case I back up “a little too much”. Whew! Now, fast forward to the NEXT rig. Say, a pickup truck. With an 8 foot bed. And a crew cab. And a hitch with two or three of those knobby balls.

Calculating from one of those “if you simulate it, they will buy” websites, we could be looking at something that requires about 22 feet. That buffer zone beyond the back bumper just shrunk to something requiring a sideways shuffle to get by.

No wonder I can’t sleep at night!
