Saw a saw or two today

posted in technology |

At an early age, TV taught me that cakes were useful, if you even went to jail. A friend, on the outside, would prepare a tasty plate, filled with creme and a hacksaw blade. After dark, the bars on the window would give way to a few careful strokes of the saw, and you could leap from the window to the back of your faithful steed (always a whistle away).

And, of course, at the first opportunity, a hacksaw from the basement tool repository would be tested. Usually on a tenpenny nail, due to the lack of bars on home windows (in our neighbourhood, at least). Hacksaws worked, but only for those with a bottomless well of patience.

Fast forward. I have a rather obvious steel pipe sticking up from the back yard lawn. A large, obvious steel pipe. Planted firmly in concrete. I placed it there; now I have to remove it. And given my life experience with hacksaws, the idea of lying on cold grass (6C today) for hours just doesn’t “cut it”. I called a friend, for advice.

Seems that there are two different tools of choice: an angle grinder, or a “Sawz-All” reciprocating saw. Until today, I owned neither. A quick round of online price review, a quick budget reference, off to the hardware emporium. Faced with an amazing assortment (I am easily amazed) of models and features, I called on one of the store experts (an old fellow) for a quick this or that lesson. I now own a reciprocating tool with a metal “metal cutting” blade and a full set of good intentions. As soon as it warms up, later this week, that metal pipe is goin’ down. The concrete base will be carefully re buried, to provide mystery to a geologist in some future epoch.
