Joys of resale

posted in economy |

The joys of buying slightly used stuff. Where, in return for less money, you also get a story. Take that, impersonal retail!

We were off to buy some extra furniture today. I know; ironic when we’re supposed to be downsizing, but there was wisdom in the folly. Anyhow, the first stop netted a lovely bedside table, from a young couple with a baby and an oversized dog, trying to get some renovations completed before their life really got busy. In and out in minutes (after admiring the fine French door out to their deck). Lots of room in the car, which made us overly optimistic for the next visit.

This time, a kitchen table (slightly larger than our current unit) and six chairs that didn’t look as if we’d used them to train the kids and dog (together). A net improvement. Of course, that much material requires sufficient space in the transporter. We were able to fit the table, easily. The first four chairs, ditto, after applying Tetris experience. Chair five, rotated a few degrees, did not require tailgate removal. And then, chair six. We did have a Plan B (involved a second round trip of close to ninety minutes), but I volunteered to place the chair on my lap. No room for error, or bumps. The heated seat had to be disabled, just because. And we were good to go.

I did mention that used stuff comes with a story. This time, the young woman was doing a parental estate sale. Certain sadness. No room to haggle. We headed back the way we came, to dismantle our own dining room stuff under happier circumstances. Now to find a taker…
