Sound of my youth

posted in history, technology |

I had the enriched childhood of a band member; in this case, concert band and all its variations. That my childhood was also enriched by good music is parallel to that.

I received my first cassette recorder shortly after its invention, that is to say in the late 1960’s, and I remember purchasing a 90-minute Philips brand tape at Whitney’s Music and Refrigerator store. Funny how smaller towns have such unique retail combinations. The tape served to “capture” the second Chicago album, in the basement of Rainer Litchenberger’s house.

Tonight, I’m writing with a televised concert of Chicago on “Sound Stage from Chicago” on in the foreground. Obviously, the younger guys weren’t even alive when the older guys were doing this stuff first time around. Still, the music seems right, albeit not without variation. Neat to have my son, who is the same age that I was when the material was first released, here with me. His attention is elsewhere, but somehow this stuff is contaminating his sub-conscious. I just know it is…

We had our window blinds changed today. Small thing in a world context, but the venetians that have gone to the dumpster had been in place for close to two decades. We were at the point of turning the individual blades, by hand, to have enough darkness to be able to see our screens for months on end. Thank goodness for small budgetary blessings. When the secretary-general stopped by to see that all was in order, I thanked her and put in a request for a hot tub. One never knows.
