Cheap VC

posted in technology |

Let the record show. Rather, let my record show that we are at the end of April. There is still a certain quantity of old snow around (front yard, tree line, over by the bus stop) and the pool has more ice than I need. The seasons are running late, and it probably won’t make any difference in the long run, but I want to make a note of such things.

In preparation for better weather, we went shopping this evening. Expensive shopping. There are now more products from the orchard in the house, and if present tendencies continue, I’m going to sing about it. Perhaps not tonight. Perhaps not this weekend. Soon. Have to pick a tune. Amazing to think that our whole register slip came in at substantially less than the cost of my Kaypro, back in the stone age of personal computing.

At work, (yet) another VC codec joined the gear in the office. VC for video conference. Codec for… something or other. Yes, I know what it means. This time around, there was a demo unit available for just over $2K, that has an integrated screen/camera and an easy-to-configure back end. LifeShare. Works very well, and we will install it in closed offices for temporary meetings. The progress from that first borrowed unit about a decade ago is astounding. Although it won’t be my responsibility, I see a whole bunch of these coming online for next year. Nobody wants to spend their evening driving long distances through the endless woods north and west of here. Cheap VC is the course for the future.
