A familiar reboot sequence

posted in technology |

Maintenance for the new decade. That’s where you remove the hard drive from your laptop and swap in the other one. The one containing an image file of Win 8; not ready to commit to the new world, but unwilling to be deprived of the updates that could disappear. Seriously. Not highly productive behavior.

I had also decided to update the firmware in our main wifi router. It doesn’t take much effort, but the whole house was destabilized for an hour or so until the various network parameters were set to that “just so” condition. I must learn how to edit/destroy existing wifi profiles, in passing.

Had to hit the hardware store this afternoon, for a new bath mat (of all things). There’s so much stuff in the local box store; kept me distracted for longer than I had hoped. One of the self service checkouts was masked as “Out of service”. Imagine my surprise to hear the familiar startup sound of good old XP while waiting in line. Just another pretty face on a trusted OS.

Incidentally, we (the guys at work) spent some time testing NFC apps on the Samsung phones. Although the information gathered was useless, we did scan our credit cards. Geek fun.

Traditions depend on continuity, so here is the annual snow calendar. I know that someone, somewhere has been waiting. And yes, the blank space for 2010 is/was intentional… this time, four years ago, someone had stolen all the available snow. The crime went unsolved. A cold case. Old joke…
