Legalize the purchase.. of elections

posted in politics |

Proof that power corrupts: the latest legislation proposed by the party that currently owns the Hill. In a surprising misread of public sentiment, there is a proposal to legalize the purchasing of elections. Oh, it’s not worded that succinctly. There’s a compete bill that comes down to a simple phrase. No spending limits. On campaigning, to start with, but that’s the game. Once the money tap starts to flow, there’s no turning it off.

Sadly, with a majority, getting a bill transformed into law is child’s play. Or childish. One or the other.

Let’s look in the other direction. Pretend that there are more important issues. As one pipeline after another bursts into flames, let’s authorize even more. The crowd likes fireworks. And if a few fish die when a waterway gets a little dirty… those fish should test the water before swimming through. Don’t their parents teach them anything in those fish schools?

Of course I’m cynical. I’m old enough to remember when there was virtue in public service. It wasn’t all about guarantees to a select few that they can continue to “grow their investments”. Anger management? Methinks it might be a good idea, before the common public erupts in reaction.

The newest politically incorrect toy for the kitchen involves some machine that makes pop. Er… soda. Not pop; that’s unhealthy. I saw the commercial, I read the FAQ, and I still don’t know why I need $200 worth of seltzer. Guess I’ll have to wait for a free sample at the market, to see if it makes the grade.
