They have a right of way

posted in environment |

When the new bulletin came up, last evening, I needed a map to find the locale. One day later, the name meas so much more. There, a relative (a once-removed cousin) is fighting a nasty fire. Once of those mixed train consists, with propane and crude oil. Funny thing; there’s neither an oil well nor a refinery within hundreds of kilometres of the place.

We’re heading into a period where a personal version of hell may run right by your home. The oil industry has a lot (more than you realize0 of nasty flammable products that have to get to market, and the rail industry has a need for new cargo. If a train or three happens to fall over and catch fire, it’s just part of doing business. For those in the neighbourhood; well, for more than a century, the term “right of way” has described the why of trackage. They don’t have to tell you when, or why, or anything else about dangerous cargo. This story will be told, over and over and over again.

As the first death reports come in from the current flu season, I’m really glad I took the time to get vaccinated.  No pain, and now no fear.

Is the week really only half-over? Vacation really wrecks one for enduring the life as a working class hero. Maybe I’ll opt for a mid-winter vacation yet. Seems like a much better idea than it did, even a few weeks ago. Time to go watch Republic Of Doyle, and remind myself of the joy of summer.
