Choosing a topic

posted in media |

Coming up on eight years of daily effort (to post something here) and there’s a question which I rarely examine. Who do I write for? I’m basically anonymous, and you (whoever you are) fit the same profile. There’s not much dialogue to offset the monologue. All a mystery, in the end. Which is why I was intrigued to hear an interview with a local journalist.

I’m read his work, occasionally. He has maintained a weekly column in one of those free newspapers that are found in kiosks near the bus stop. And he has decided to publish some of his “back catalogue”. Oddly, he didn’t have the stuff around; he had to Google his name to find his own work. Leads to some moments of review and reflection…

The interviewer asked about where the topics come from, and I completely understood the response. “The topics find me.” Exactly how it works. I don’t wake in the morning with a clear idea of what I’ll write before the end of the day. There’s always something that comes along (like the release of a new book by a journalist). You can’t plan for those things. Yes; sometimes a topic gets “germinated” before “planting”, but most of this blog is spontaneous.

I considered preparing several posts to have “in the can” for things like post-op recovery. Maybe two or three for while I’m flat on my back… Anything more and the style of this site would change, a little. My preference is to continue in the same happy go lucky mode that works so well.
