Minor notes for a Monday
Rejoice, and be glad, for there is still a place for the optimist. While checking out the news on CNN, I learned that a leading rabble-rouser in Washington has decided to retire. In and of itself, nothing there. The better part came in remarks by his boss, who added that “I’ll be on the road behind you here in a little bit.”
Less optimism in the news for a group of coal miners who remain missing in action. I’ve said before that the business of coal mining is a dirty one, in all the senses of the word. Here we have an owner who stands before the world and blames the disaster on an act of nature. His corporate practices had NOTHING to do with it. The company is as white (innocent) as the snows of Kilimanjaro. Oops! Might be time to change the simile. NASA has some interesting photos of the true state of affairs on that summit. Methinks that the whole technique of retreat mining may need some further thought.
In Vancouver, the courts are wrapping up seven months of sordid testimony in a serial murder trial. Let’s see if the defense can do the honourable thing, present their single word of rebuttal and let the sentencing begin. For those who have problems with simple word puzzles, try g-u-i-l-t-y and move on to the next question.
Finally, it seems that my cute little paunch may indicate that heart disease might be among my possibilities as a reason for death. Thank goodness; I was afraid I might live forever.
