Crowded city streets

posted in travel |

Second day on our big city adventure. Many things aren’t like “at home”. First rule of thumb: bring money. Nothing free here. Not even the ‘net.

I was willing to keep wandering, but my significant other signed us up for 24 of real ‘net. Despite the urge to put every gadget in our luggage online (at once) I have settled for restraint. And now back to our wandering.

Culture has been set aside, to allow better mobility. With a ‘free pass’ to the subway, we reduced the foot wear marginally. Only 12 clicks (each). A morning bagel with a huge HOT coffee was followed by a great, great meal in a local steakhouse. Spices do make a difference. And we did break for dessert (cheesecake, if you please). But enough about food.

This was a hardware day. I added a brand spanking new portable recorder to my toolbox, after bargaining the price down a few dollars. The clerk was afraid he would insult me by the low percentage of reduction over the asking sticker; I told him to go ahead and insult away. While out and about, we priced euphoniums for other, interested parties. Oddly, the main music store showed little interest in selling to us; I guess that a near monopoly makes one complacent.

Bookstores were also on the list of cultural attractions, if only for their ability to convince a constipated mind to loosen up and let go. Not just minds…

And then we ran out of the urge to shoulder our way through crowds. Everywhere, crowds. The guy with the Ferrari accepted my staring at his car, only because I also said it was cool. The guys seeking loose change (and there were many) accepted that people of my age don’t carry around sacks of coinage. And the subway musicians are really, really good. But enough for one day.
