Don’t touch that upgrade
The good little elves over at Dell came through. A new machine, ordered on Tuesday and sitting on my table by Friday; good service, and I didn’t have to smile at anyone. The next few days will be busy ones, as I try to recreate my profile on the new hardware, but I know the drill. As a plus, I can decide to leave off a whole set of software that I don’t use.
This could have been a quiet day at work. It wasn’t. The multiple VCs; no biggie. Making sure that the payroll system had sufficient support; no screams heard from that department. The one exception came from unexpected updates. Someone heeded the siren call of IE Ten, and then discovered that most government websites weren’t “aware”. I used the usual out of doing an uninstall, which left the machine with no web browser at all. Not useful, in my context.
I did install Firefox, but the government is old school. Not acceptable to their myopic view of accredited software. I asked Google. I downloaded a variety of older versions of the Big Blue E. Nope. Windows told me that the package was already installed, and left me with the weekend to ponder other strategies.
More snow. Not as much as down east, but enough to remind us of the elusive nature of springtime. In fact, walking back from the bus in bright sunshine, with a curtain of flurries that hid the world was interesting. Only thing missing; my camera. Of course.
