Sonifying the world around me… not.

posted in education, music |

If you hear that I’ve gone out and purchased more than one Theramin, please contact the authorities. I have finally become sonically dangerous.

It comes back to this course that I’m auditing, on sound design. The first week gave me basic concepts. The second week gave me confidence. The third week gave me tools. And this week… after listening to several of the professor’s compositions, I believe that a label should be prominently displayed.

No musicians were harmed (or involved) in the creation of this composition.

A little harsh. There were actually several moments that didn’t recall an afternoon of fingernails on a chalkboard. Please, use the editor software and save them for posterity. I may not have the moral fibre to get involved in sonifying my world.  There are several (video) lectures to go, but I’m going to remember this course as one that did not redirect my career focus.

Still busily watching the progress of a parcel across the surface of the globe. Postal systems do not provide granular information, so each time the progress line takes a leap or changes colour, there’s a sense of impending joy. Pardon the mixed metaphor.

Another new employee, in our department. That makes for a doubling of the team in the last couple of years, without any change in the day-to-day. New faces, new voices, new experience banks. It pales when compared to the vitality of any classroom. Back in my “school days”, there were new members of the community every single year. Perhaps the workplace should adopt that model, if only to keep me amused.
