Loosely based upon…

posted in media |

I’m on a real four day weekend as of this afternoon, and after gathering up the usual suspects, we headed off for a mall crawl. Time to look at expensive model railroad stuff, expensive model automobiles (a real honey of a BMW 600 for only $120) and expensive movie memorabilia. After that much expensive looking, I was only too happy to eat some cheap Chinese buffet before returning home. Via the movie rental place. Where we chose films we didn’t know much about.

I have read a lot of bus books over the years, and one good author is Stephen Hunter, who writes books loosely based upon a former sniper. By chance, we rented the movie Shooter which is loosely based upon one of his books. I’ve read the book, and loosely is the operative term here. Not having to follow the plotline of the book leaves much room for special effects, even if the characters are one-dimensional. Cut-out targets for the sniper. There; the book tie-in.

The movie had decent entertainment value, if one likes helicopters and hi-tech weaponry. In fact, the Wiki entry for the movie goes far beyond a movie summary; the links to the gun manufacturer sites are among the least of the details. I could print that out and have enough reading material for a short bus trip. Shades of green on green. I will recommend the movie though, without hesitation. We’ve just spent a couple of hours not knowing how things would turn out. Pretty good diversion.
