Some pre-game highlights

posted in sports |

Starting with the big news. The first snowfall of the season has stayed, all day. Not sure this is the lock-in point of the winter, but a picture is in order.

First snow of 2012 season

The only attention point on TV, today, is the 100th Grey Cup match, from a covered stadium in Toronto. No chance of a snow storm for them. It could be the middle of summer; no difference noted. In fact, I’m going into the role of spectator with no attachment to either of the teams. Can’t call for the home team, or the visitors, or the jersey colours. Nothing. I’ll watch, and I will remain neutral.

The whole spectacle is choreographed beyond need. Burton Cummings singing the anthem (badly). How come his hair colour remains constant? I mean, I watched the Guess Who before I could shave.  A huge, new flag, with sufficient material to clothe a team. A coin, freshly minted (although not specifically for today) for the toss. The GG, kicking the ball (badly) and then receiving a round of congratulations from the interested bystanders. Old video of other kickers (hey, there’s Dief, and Mike, and PET, and other faces from the days when people dressed (badly) for such an occasion.

Enough of the game highlights. Even the dog is disinterested.

Picked up some “project boxes” from what used to be Radio Shack this afternoon. The clerk didn’t even know what they were. Proof that homebrewing (electronics, not beer) is from an earlier generation. At least the price is still within reason, and my SDR efforts will be protected from the elements.
