Praise where it is due

posted in economy |

Eureka! I’ve finally found a company that cares about their clients. Eureka!

Several weeks back, in a moment of melancholy over the end of vacation, I sent an email to the wholesaler that supplies a large part of my name brand camping gear. Tents, in particular. I had a pole collapse on our tent (a major issue, when you intend to stay in the tent for weeks on end, and it only has two). Anyhow, they replied within minutes, asking that I send the pole in for inspection. At home, we found a second pole (from one of the other tents by the same manufacturer which had snapped in the field. Packaged them up (in a cardboard tube that had delivered my low D whistle) and sent them off by courier ($3).

Today, a parcel at the post office. Two new poles, no charge. We’re ready to head off, right now! Let’s start summer again. Eureka! As a company, you rock!

The new provincial government has taken over the assembly and decreed that the announced tuition hike will not take place. As well, the law that put students back in the classroom has been repealed. OK. It’s good when governments do something other than dither. But might I point out that the problem which set this all in play (chronic underfunding at the university level) still remains. All we’ve done is hit Play Over on the big game console. Sooner or later, somebody has to realize that free stuff often rhymes with nothing at all. Education didn’t get better because the new government refused to do a reality check.
