Steam punk for the modern man
Consider this as a resolution. I’m going to opt for higher thread counts in my sheets. Didn’t realize what a difference a little comfort makes in life. That, and a hot tub are high on my list of things to “get”, after our weekend away. For the record, we finished with a wonderful breakfast before leaving the Manoir du Lac William today.
Routine returns, quickly. A sortie to get some groceries, including good muffins for the next few mornings, and then the inevitable preparation for another work week. However, it’s best to end vacation on a higher note, so we watched the movie Hugo before calling it a day.
I avoided my usual preparation, this time around. No idea of the plotline, or the director, or the rating offered up by other viewers. Just old-fashioned curiosity. And this one is a keeper. A certain degree of steam punk to provide the cast iron skeleton. A cast of actors that kept me delighted. Yes, Sacha Baron Cohen is an odd duck, but he knows it too. Ben Kingsley doesn’t do bad cinema. Trains. OK, the iron horse is a bit player, upstaged by the steel man and the fire-breathing dragon. The train station, however, never stops with the visual delights.
In fact, the play of light and texture is almost too rich for the plot line. We didn’t know what the movie was about, until the final credits appeared. But… isn’t that what a fine movie is supposed to be like? Scorsese earned his keep with this one.
