Death by a thousand cuts
An Imperial China version of torture: slow death by a thousand cuts. A Canadian version: repeal of the long gun registry. Draw your own conclusions on which is more civilized.
Today, the long awaited vote in the House of Commons, on Bill C-19. The vote passed; surprisingly, it wasn’t a Con Grand Slam, after two NDP members sided with the majority. Some sort of need to be loved, I guess. The bill will now advance to the Senate (Con Grand Slam, sleepy version) for the proof that second thought isn’t always sober, and then the final step of Royal assent. I wish the Queen would speak to the matter, but we’ll have to settle for second best.
Odd that a government, so much in favour of “less intervention in the lives of the general citizenry” also plans to put legislation into place to allow “we know what you think, so we know what you might do”. Or, as the government puts it, helping the police to track down criminals by allowing access to everything you do on those Internet tubes. Big Brother cares!
I don’t own a long gun. Never have. The LGR didn’t involve me. On the other hand, I spend a great deal of my time lost in the maze. I am unsure of the concept, where the police can follow me around. Don’t they have anything better to do?
Canada is changing. For the better? That will be up to future generations to judge. In the here and now version, the government isn’t really concerned about my concerns.
