More channels, lots more channels

posted in technology |

I rushed home (if riding the bus can ever be rushed) but I was too late. By the time I breached the front door, the changes were made. The cable guy had come and gone.

Big changes. New telephone provider. HD on the TV. More channels than I can get my head around. The only thing missing is the clock in my room; the fancy terminal unit is now in the living room where all and sundry can benefit from the surfeit of data. One channel at a time. In the off chance that I could take a step backward, I did the mandatory search for another terminal unit.

And they’re out there. SD. HD. PVR. Anything you want, at a price. There’s a terminal just like the one we returned to the cable company (now considered as obsolete) for only $25 plus a car ride across town and back. Nothing is ever that simple. I contacted cable service via the convenient chat window on their website.

Two specialists later, I’m better informed. Yes. I can provide my own terminal. No, I can’t just hook it up. They’ll know. The proper method is to inform the cable company of my intent, amend our contract to provide them with an additional $3.99 per billing period (or $9.50 if I want to rent a terminal in addition to paying the user fee) and profit. A few more channels, a lot more music.

I don’t know. Just hooking up the old TV has given me what I had before (downstairs). No clock. No program guide. No digital music channels. Given the limited time available in a day, perhaps I’ll wait until winter.
