No backup? Get to it!
The prediction that technical evolution has ended may be overstated, but according to certain industry pundits, the retirement of Steve Jobs sounds the death knell for life as we now know it. Funny; I thought that global warming, or a fiery meteor would win that title. Who knew?
I speak as someone that doesn’t rub a phone, or a music player to get my jollies. I still believe in C-A-D (Control Alt Delete) as the response to “How do you fix a frozen screen”. Or pulling the plug (I’m pragmatic). If I never have to use another one-button mouse, I’ll be content. The withdrawal of the genius in a turtleneck is sad. Full stop.
I do work in a Windows shop, though, and when one of my “clients” arrived at the cubicle entrance, one minute before quitting time, it didn’t bode well. A sudden attack by a “worm” had left a laptop in a state of confusion. That the laptop contained a career of writing and presentations, with no viable backup was not a reason to rejoice and be glad. So, I put the coat back on my chair, cleared some desk space and tried to maintain a positive attitude towards life.
Yes, thanks to a key-based distro of Linux, I managed to recover enough content for tomorrow’s workshop to go ahead as scheduled, but… the next few days just became more complicated. There’s a lot of data on that laptop, and the expectation is that I’ll recover everything. Maybe…
Please, if you haven’t “done a backup recently”, get to it.
