Degrading conditions

posted in travel |

It’s a fact. Not every summer day can be sunny and warm, in a “take me to the beach” kind of way. Today just confirmed the fact.

Granted, at early coffee time (07h30) the sun was visible, and the thin layer of cloud to the west was insignificant. By late coffee time (09h30), when my neighbour requested my version of the “probs”, I had to issue an update. Nice, right here, for the next fifteen minutes. No pessimism intended.

When we stopped at Basin Head to watch the ferry pass by, there was a perceptible veil of haze, and the conditions had deteriorated to the point where Skalliwags (the takeout) had closed and shuttered “due to the weather”. On a Sunday, with the parking lot running at 75%…

No matter; we were up and down and in and out the roads, and as long as the pavement remained solid, we were good to go. Over to look at an old house that had been renovated beyond repair. Up to the lighthouse, where even the birds were waterbound. Off for a restaurant rendezvous with a visiting friend. Inside, we failed to notice the darkening outside.

By the time we beat a retreat to our cars, the rain was heavy. Driven. A reminder that not every night in a tent is pleasant. I wished I had added a few more stays, so things would stay… Hindsight is so perceptive. There’ll be no need for a campfire this evening; the wet wood remains safe from immolation.
