The impossible illusion of the nacho

posted in media |

This weekend was more than a Superbowl Sunday. With sub-zero weather and no urge to watch network TV, I was off to the video store for a shopping trip. In the same mood as a hungry person going grocery shopping, I was content to take whatever looked yummy, without any attention to nutritional values. Here is my reaction to a triple-whammy sundae on Sunday.

First into the machine, MI:3. Finally, some attention to the ancestor. This one scores high on affinity to the work of Mr. Phelps, Rollin’, Cinnamon, Paris, Willy and the other IMF members. Some regret that this movie didn’t offer up as many colourful names, but the rest of the detail was ready for action. Rubber masks, manhole covers, hot cars (although the Lamborghini would not pass a PEI Inspection with a gearshift that opened to the road below, and it would not be good on Island roads at any time of year). I even twigged to the use of the original theme music; much better than Metallica! Three movies, three different directors; Abrams wins.

Next up, The Illusionist. Without offering up any spoilers, let’s just agree that nothing is as it seems. Prague as Vienna… not. On the up side, the Sherlock Holmes styling, and the stage lights that are on fire work for me. Definitely worth the time.

Finally, Nacho Libre. Think of this one as Mexican food from one of those Old El Paso packages, with emphasis on the red and white rather than the spices. Jack Black is as good here as in School Of Rock – he even sings in key. Note to self: find other movies that he’s done and take them home too. Remember the cute nun from elementary school (no…), well, she’s alive and living south of the Rio Grande.

I didn’t get a big screen TV in time for SuperBowl, but I did use my DVD player for something other than changing channels. Don’t ask. Our old TV has a few issues.
