The rare sight of a clean, dry towel
Hours of fun for the whole family! Go ahead, imagine the headline. Parse the phrase. Now, down to the content of the article.
Yes, the job takes hours, and it profits the whole family. But, there’s little to draw an enthusiastic smile on my face, as I work through the piles of damp towels that accumulate on available surfaces in my home. Here a bin, there a heap; enough terry cloth to require a small factory. How is it that I’m the only one who senses the problem?
I live with trained professionals in the field. Two out of three (sons) in this household work, yes, in a hotel laundry where they clean and fold towels for a living. If I was to look for better qualified personnel for the family enterprise, I don’t know where I would go. The lack of “enterprise” is the key to the puzzle.
Ask who requires towels, plural every day. Ask where they find the dry, folded content for their assault on the family bath area. And ask why the complete picture seems to escape their vision. How many towels does it take to dry the average adolescent? Too many to count, methinks.
It fits in well with the dishwashing station in the kitchen area. If the cupboards are filled with clean dishes at bedtime, what happens between dusk and dawn to require a chorus of “Starting over”? More to the point, what will happen when my fledglings fly? Will their new homes be good for one or two meals, only, before all resources have been exhausted?
Do clean towels and dishes incite a frenzy in the younger generation?
