Look ahead by looking back
The start of a new year is a wonderful time to reflect upon the past. The national television network treated us to the retrospective Bye-Bye last evening; a moment in which the Quebec nation is actually joined as one. My own capsule of the last year will not attain the same inconsistent level of humour, but let’s begin.
Demographics are in. No births or deaths. Two weddings; a special salute to my eldest female relative, who was married last Friday morning. One new dog to replace another (hard to do).
No arrests that I know about. I did not ride my bicycle or send Morse code on any occasion. My height and weight remained the same. I did not invest in any penny stocks despite constant solicitation by the friendly spammers that seem to know almost all my email addresses. I did lose the password to one inbox. The instrument museum added an accordion and the neighbours were kept at bay. Ditto mosquitoes.
I tried at least two new national cuisines (Indian and Mexican, if you must know) and no sushi passed my lips. I did eat more seafood than in other years, though. I did not buy a farm. My tax returns were all filed in a complete and truthful manner by the required deadlines.
I wore my tuque and gloves consistently, thus avoiding near occasions of frostbite during the many long winter months. I, for one, believe that global warming might have some positive aspects. The new thermostats did keep others in the house seeking warmth. Part of the basement was cleaned up.
All things considered, this upcoming year won’t be bad if it follows a similar pattern.
