New version of Linux Mint has launched
Like a jewel in a bag of pebbles, Linux Mint has come through again. Another update, installed without brute force or unparliamentary language.
Going back a ways here, I actually installed Minix when there wasn’t much else available. No, it didn’t do much for me, but it did serve as that first baby step towards adoption of the Linux way. Slackware, when it was still possible to install from diskettes. Compiling a new kernel on another machine, because otherwise the task spent the few patience pennies left in the bank.
First efforts with X. Reading the warning that mentioned, in understated language, that setting the wrong parameters in my monitor profile could cause a fire. For real. I never did smell the smoke. And on we went.
By the time early versions of Mint were “out there”, I was ready for something that didn’t require a novena to get root. Where sound and wifi weren’t a theoretical premise. And the Mint team delivered, over and over again.
Today, the green of Mint took on golden overtones, as version 10, “Julia” left the starting gate. My ISO came in quickly, and the wonky DVD burner on my laptop delivered a disk that booted on demand. My installation was fast, even elegant. The other partitions have been recognized, I’m on wireless and the webcam came up as soon as I said “cheese”. Firefox bookmarks are portable between versions, and my dual boot machine is ready for the storm.
I do reformat between versions, so this is a clean install. Time to set up my printers and get ready to see what other surprises are waiting in the menus.
