Obsolete maps and high winds

posted in environment |

As we are called to remember on this day, I pray that Canadians will remember, where it counts. In the voting cubicle. How many more soldiers will die because the current government has decided to leave them “in harm’s way”?

On to happier things.

Tonight I took the time to transfer my son’s first efforts with a camera to other media (the memory card wasn’t the best choice, long term, for archival storage). Better than eight virtual “rolls of colour film”, under the system I grew up with. Not bad, newbie! I guess I’ll have to keep the camera available, now that he’s learned to point it away from himself.

Had a bit of a “moment” at work, after installing our mapping software in the transportation department. Suddenly, all of their routing files were no longer functional. Turned out that the reason was less than mysterious; they had updated their software before misplacing the media during the summer doldrums. Of course, the change remained undocumented. The next time around, I will install the update and store the media myself!

We had to temporarily close the payroll department this morning, due to high winds. Impressions are everything; the heating company had been in during the evening, and cranked the airflow up. When the staff arrived just after dawn, the post-its were flying and the mice were hovering. Moved the affected office agents to another part of the building, called in the wind tunnel team, and then moved the office agents back a couple of hours later when things had settled down. I swear, we could have had a morning of kite flying, if we’d been better warned.
