South for some chowder

posted in travel |

There is an Island legend, although not well known to native settlers, that buffalo roam the fields and forests of the land. For the intrepid explorer, there is a place, bounded by mysterious fences, where sightings have been reported in the last century. Each time we pass through Ms ailltown Cross, I cast a keen eye, but it remains, alas, apocryphal.

This afternoon, we returned to the southern reaches of the province, with long stops in Murray River and Murray Harbour. We missed the North leg, due to a lack of time.

Brehaut’s restaurant remained the highlight of the afternoon. They have the most authentic chowders we’ve enjoyed. Even in mid-afternoon, we had to wait for a table; their reputation is solid.

After a brief shopping trip to the bookstore in Murray River (please, get Interac…), we detoured by an estate sale (in preparation) on the Whim Road. The dog was overjoyed by our company; he even went inside and brought out some favourite toys to convince us to stay. Fear of being auctioned off, come morning? Who can tell?

A milkshake break at Gillis’s Drive-In in Montague, and then a mandatory wifi pause in Souris; such is the life of the relaxed tourist. We’d already done our good deed for the day, by helping our neighbour to repair a fire-scorched pillow. Accidents happen, I guess. Something to point out to a certain motorcyclist who straddled the centre line (at 90 degrees) to retrieve a dropped cap. Thankfully, the traffic stream slowed in both directions, or he might have become another sad statistic.
