Lots of software tools, just in case
I feel like the guy who owns a whole yard full of roadbuilding machines, but still doesn’t know where to lay pavement.
The one thing about software based on PHP/MySQL is that installation is really easy. Other than the bit of remembering the admin password for more than thirty seconds, but that’s a different issue. I’m ready to try packages (seeking my own Grail), and right now my local server is prepared for almost any eventuality. I’ve got Wiki, and Drupal, and Joomla, and WordPress, and Moodle, and Spippy, and PHPBB; did I miss any? There are (also) a few specialized packages; PHPGedview to manage who I am, and Coppermine, to manage what I’ve seen, and PHPAdmin to fix the things I break along the way.
Lots of code, written by others. Sometimes I customize, sometimes I accept willingly. I also try to convince others to dig their own virtual holes.
Try to imagine if each of those tools was “nourished” with data! I could educate my world, and then some. Sadly, I’m lacking motivation. By the time I have the time, the tools will have evolved and I’ll be back to preparing my working playground. You see the problem.
I have completed some Wiki content. I guess the next step will be to see if anything from that test case can be mutated into content for another CMS. Or (here’s a thought) perhaps I can put some organization into the document collection here. Surely there’s work for the next (fill in an appropriate period of time here) and this whole experiment will take on added value.
