Pay no attention to the signal meter

posted in technology |

Big story in the technical world today: the supposed problem with signal reception on the newest iPhone isn’t a problem, after all.

In fact, it’s actually a bug in software that has overscaled signal reports. After the next system update, everything will appear weaker, and only exceptionally strong signals will be shown as acceptably strong. Any perception that clients have about dropped calls when the device is held “like this” were actually due to altered perception.

In the world of ham radio, you tell the DX station that he is “5 by 9”. After all, he doesn’t know what you hear, so tell him something absurd. Works every time. Maybe Steve Jobs is actually a disgruntled radio operator…

Here’s the weakness in the corporate argument. If you hold the phone “not like this”, you have fewer dropped calls. Now, I don’t even own an iPhone, but if you can correct the signal strength discrepancy before the software update has been issued, maybe Apple has some placebo effect mumbo-jumbo in the works. Kind of like the retinal mumbo-jumbo they’ve been advertising.

I worry when companies keep changing the story. Maybe the new iPhone isn’t the greatest thing since the bread knife (after all, sliced bread is overpresented as a model of perfection).

While cleaning the pool this afternoon, I decided to check out a lack of pressure. The lower skimmer filter thing was plugged, solid. Somehow, a large amount of the cedar hedge next door found its way into my private pond and got sucked into the vortex. My fingers did the walking, but I worry about what else might some day manifest its existence. Creature from the lagoon and all that stuff.
